Description
Fierce Mursi warriors with Kalashnikov assault rifles, from Ethiopia's South Omo Valley -- dressed in teddy bear fleece. One of Ethiopia's many fascinating contradictions and juxtapositions.

A P Polo
This picture and its reality "behind" it is so contradictory in itself that I find it absolutely fantastic !! Only the idea that someone dressed in a teddy bear blanket might attack you with a Kalashnikov is hard to beat for absurdity. At first, you might laugh, but if you let this complex total reality sink in for a moment, then you might wonder in sadness whether human evolution is possible at all. 50000 years to evolve from nudity and a stick to a teddy bear-wearing Rambo. Thank you for this picture, from my personal point of view one of the best photos on FAA.

Thank you so much for the kind words A P! I felt the same way when I saw these guys -- here we are traveling from the United States to Ethiopia, and what seem to be the simplest meanings of things take on completely different shapes. I don't photograph people all that much, and these days in the South Omo Valley were just mind bending for me.
