At the time Versailles was created, the French did not have the technology or know how to create large mirrors. The Venetians had this knowledge. Craftsmen were often kidnapped (even murdered if they did not cooperate) to France to help with the construction of this room. Louis XIV wanted to wow his visitors. It wasn't until the 19th century that large plate glass technology was posible. Louis couldn't wait that long.
